Sarajevo is one of the busiest places in the Balkans over New Year. Visitors from across Europe, Turkey and the Gulf come for the celebrations, families from the diaspora come home for the holidays, and the ski resorts on Jahorina and Bjelašnica open for the season. That makes the end of December the hardest time of the year to find a rental car at short notice.

This guide explains how to plan a New Year trip to Sarajevo with a car: when to book, what winter driving is like, where to go, and what to watch out for over the holidays. It's written by the AB Rent a Car team, based on what we see every winter.

Why New Year in Sarajevo is so busy

    Book your car early

Over New Year, demand for rental cars in Sarajevo is higher than at any other time except summer. Cars, especially larger family cars and SUVs, are often fully booked by the middle of December.

    Winter driving: what to expect

Winter in Sarajevo is cold and often snowy, especially in the mountains around the city. Main roads are cleared quickly, but side streets on the hills can stay icy.

New Year's Eve in the city

Tip: the Yellow Fortress (Žuta tabija) above the old town is one of the best places to watch the fireworks over the city. Walk up from Baščaršija, as there's almost no parking nearby.

Ski days on Jahorina and Bjelašnica

Both resorts hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics and are easy day trips by car.

The mountain village of Lukomir can only be reached on a rough gravel road, which isn't allowed with rental cars, so go with an off-road tour instead. See all the places in our guide to exploring Sarajevo by car.
