Sarajevo is the perfect base for day trips. Within 30 minutes to 2.5 hours by car you can reach the "pyramid" hill of Visoko, Ottoman bridges, waterfalls in the middle of a town and some of the most beautiful river canyons in Europe. Most of these places are hard to reach by public transport, so a rental car makes the difference.
Here are our 10 favourites, from closest to furthest, with drive times, what to see and practical tips. It's written by the AB Rent a Car team, based on the trips we recommend to our own customers.

Visoko is famous for Visočica hill, which some believe is a pyramid, and for the underground Ravne tunnels you can walk through with a guide. Whatever you think of the theory, it's an easy and interesting half day, and the old town has good leather workshops.
A small town on the emerald Neretva river with a rebuilt Ottoman stone bridge and a long woodcarving tradition. Nearby is Tito's secret Cold War bunker (ARK D-0), which you can visit on a guided tour booked in advance. In summer, Konjic is the start of rafting trips on the Neretva.
A quiet village in a green valley with one of the oldest Franciscan monasteries in Bosnia, and the ruins of Bobovac, the medieval royal town, nearby. A good choice if you want something away from the crowds.
The old capital of Ottoman Bosnia, with a fortress above the town, the colourful Many-Coloured Mosque, old stone houses, and the cold springs of Plava voda, where riverside restaurants serve trout and Travnik cheese. It's also the birthplace of Nobel Prize-winning writer Ivo Andrić.
The most famous day trip from Sarajevo: the Old Bridge (Stari most) over the Neretva, the old bazaar and the bridge divers in summer. The drive along the Neretva canyon is one of the most beautiful in the Balkans.
Two places just south of Mostar that are easy to add to the same trip. In Blagaj, the dervish house (Tekija) sits under a cliff at the source of the Buna river. Počitelj is a small fortified stone village climbing a hill above the Neretva.
A wide ring of waterfalls falling into a green lake, very popular for swimming in summer.
A small royal town where a waterfall drops right in the town centre into the Vrbas river. Just outside town, the wooden watermills on the Pliva lakes are one of the prettiest sights in Bosnia.
The 16th-century Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge over the Drina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the setting of Ivo Andrić's novel "The Bridge on the Drina". The drive through the Drina valley is beautiful.
The Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial and Cemetery honours the victims of the 1995 genocide. It's a difficult but important visit for anyone who wants to understand Bosnia's recent history.

Mostar is the most popular, for the Old Bridge and the drive along the Neretva. Konjic and Visoko are great shorter options, and Travnik with Jajce makes a full day.
Yes, if you start early. Drive to Mostar in the morning, then on to Kravice and back, about 5–6 hours of driving in total.
About 35 minutes by car, on the A1 motorway.
Yes. Travnik is about 1.5 hours from Sarajevo, and Jajce about another hour further. Plan a long day and drive back before dark.
It's the easiest way. Most of these places have few or slow buses, and with a car you can combine two or three of them in one day.
